About PATA - background

PATA is the largest voluntary sector provider of support to early years childcare and education in Gloucestershire.

Started in the 1960s when the playgroup movement came into being, Gloucestershire Pre-school Playgroups Association (PPA) was registered as a charity in 1986. That same charitable status has remained, through various name changes, and continues - since 2008 - as a charitable company, PATA (UK).

In 1992, Gloucestershire PPA detached itself from being a county body within a national organisation (Pre-school Playgroups Association - PPA, now Pre-school Learning Alliance) and remained an autonomous Gloucestershire charity, named Gloucestershire Playgroup and Toddler Association, or Gloucestershire PATA, and now PATA (UK). In loose collaboration with about 10 other early years & childcare charities around England, PATA was active in Playgroup Network. PATA was, and is, the largest, and one of only two of those independent charities to remain today.

Over the years, baby & toddler groups were welcomed into the fold and later the out of school sector, as well as the private and maintained sectors, making PATA - with more than 200 members today - by far the largest voluntary sector organisation supporting early years and childcare settings in and around Gloucestershire, but keeping "PATA" as the well known name. In the 1990s there was plenty of local government financial support but most of that is no longer available. Settings themselves are now in direct receipt of government funding through the county council with Nursery Education Funding, and learning loans and apprenticeships are available for adults in training in the early years, childcare and education sectors. Playgroups & preschools, many out of school clubs and some toddler groups are autonomous charities themselves, and are able to fundraise and apply for grants in their own name.

PATA now provides training, support and information to a range of settings (across voluntary, private and maintained sectors) offering high quality childcare, education and play opportunities.

PATA's work throughout Gloucestershire plays a major part in sustaining local communities and contributes to the county's economic success and the elimination of child poverty and social exclusion.
