PATA Pocket-Sized: Phonics in the EYFS

This fast paced hour-long session will look at what we can do in our Early Years Settings to introduce children in a gentle way to the world of Phonics. This course gives practical ideas and looks at a light touch approach to prepare them with enhancing their letters and sounds ready for their journey into the reception class.

NETWORK MEETING 

Whilst we will always have a focus to the network meetings, we are also mindful that there may be different concerns relating to a continued evolving situation. The network meetings will therefore always be topical taking into account the current landscape.

This network meeting is open to Early Years Managers and Deputies in PATA member settings and provides a great opportunity to meet with colleagues from other settings and share experiences and expertise.

Makaton is a multi-modal language programme that uses signs, symbols and speech for children and adults with speech, language and communication needs to build on their understanding and use of speech and language.

These are fun, informal sessions with a chance to practise the signs and symbols taught with each other and learn a new skill. You will receive workbooks and a certificate of attendance. 

Level 1 training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. Sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.

Level 2 training in Makaton builds on what you learnt in Level 1. You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.

Level 3 training helps you to improve and develop your signing and symbol skills and how to use them effectively every day. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1 and 2 training and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 5 and 6 of the Core Vocabulary. 

Level 4 training completes the Makaton Core Vocabulary and formal training. You will revise the signs and symbols you learned in your Level 1, 2 and 3 training, and learn the signs and symbols for Stages 7 and 8 of the Core Vocabulary. 

The course fee includes a Makaton workbook per Level.

Taster Session These short sessions are designed for anyone who is interested in finding out about Makaton before deciding whether or not to attend further intensive Makaton training. The Taster session gives you a general introduction into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the opportunity to learn a few signs and symbols too (between 30 and 60).

Liz Pemberton, The Black Nursery Manager, presents 'Working Towards Anti Racist Practice in the Early Years Setting'

(Please note this course was previously advertised with the title 'How to Explore Race with Children in Early Years Settings’ but the content has not changed.)

Embedding cultures and diversity within an early years setting is a vital part of the EYFS. Children and their families will feel valued by the setting if resources and displays represent the ethnic, cultural and social diversity in society, and if they can see their own family background and culture represented as well as those of others. True inclusion means your setting will have diversity running through its core regardless of your current make-up of families on role.

Course Aim: To promote inclusive practice in the Early Years (under 5's) education sector, with a particular focus on how race, culture and anti-racism should be considered in this practice.

Session 1: Statutory and Non-Statutory Guidance: This first session will look closely at how some of the statutory and non-statutory guidance can support us to work towards anti-racist practice. We will closely examine how the Development Matters and Birth to Five Matters documents can be interpreted to support our journey towards anti-racist practice.

Session 2 : Conversations: How do we prepare ourselves for unexpected conversations about race when children ask ? This session will look at language and how we can best educate ourselves to ensure that we are equipped. This session will also look at how we engage families appropriately.

Session 3: Resources: How do you audit your existing resources to help ensure an anti-racist approach is supported in the setting ? How can we ensure that our practice goes beyond having Black dolls and a range of different coloured crayons ? How do we move towards a whole team approach to continuously work towards creating an anti-racist environment?

Suitable For: Anyone working with children under the age of 5.

SEND - The Building Blocks of Behaviour - seeking connection not control

This interactive online course is an opportunity for us to explore one of the biggest topics in early childhood - behaviour. Developing relational approaches can be difficult when we are faced with lots of different emotions, feelings and behaviours. This course addresses some of the key ways in which we can develop boundaries that help us to connect with rather than control children. Through the session you will come to understand;

• What is meant by developmentally appropriate behaviour, and how to understand in the context of expressing needs.
• The differences between top-down and bottom-up behaviours, and why we must be flexible in behaviour support. 
• The importance of helping children to move through moods.
• How to move beyond correcting and controlling behaviour, but instead connecting with the behaviour, and therefore the child.
• Why wellbeing and well-doing is crucial in behaviour support. 
• The Behaviour in children aged 2 to 6 years.

This course will include a digital workbook, certificate, and you will complete some interactive gap tasks.

Delivered by: Kerry Murphy who is an Early Years SEND Specialist and has worked with a local authority. Kerry has had strategic responsibility for the quality of SEND provision including developing the SENCO and SEND-Based training programmes. PATA Pocket-Sized: Oral Health (Through Sensory Play)

Toddlers and very young children often put things in their mouths, grind their teeth, chew on their clothes as a way to develop a sense of their bodies. Oral seeking children may even try to bite others.

This hour long session will explore the importance of oral sensory play and taste experiences as stimulating all our senses by considering:

• how developing a strong sense of taste and smell helps children become familiar with different flavours and textures.

• oral motor activity ideas (including the story of Mr Tongue) – to develop the control of children’s lips, tongue and saliva.

• why oral health is in the EYFS framework.

Building Your Confidence with Ofsted

Join Wendy Ratcliff (Ofsted Principal Officer for Early Education and Early Years Inspector) and Caroline Hearn (Ofsted Specialist Adviser for Early Years Regulatory Policy and Practice) as they dispel some of the unhelpful misconceptions around Ofsted inspections.

Wendy and Caroline will provide insight into how to prepare for an Ofsted inspection, giving your whole team greater confidence. They will discuss what to expect from an Ofsted Inspection, including how to look after your staff’s wellbeing as well as your own throughout the process.

PATA Pocket-Sized: Developing the Curriculum and Understanding the 3 I's

This fast paced 90 minute session explores what is a curriculum and how to design a curriculum to suit your setting. This looks at the EYFS and the Quality of Education. This then looks at what Ofsted are looking for in the setting.

The later part of this course unpicks the 3 I's - looking at the intent, the implementation and how we measure impact in our settings.

PATA Pocket-Sized: Supporting Positive Behaviour

This 90 minute session will focus on the positive side of behaviour, common behaviour we see in young children and supporting parents and meeting the children's needs. This will look at the updates in the EYFS 2024 terminology and how you can develop effective practices, policies and procedures and record keeping in your setting. The latter part of the course looks at ideas to implement to bring calm and support children with their feelings and emotions in the environment.

Self-Regulation, Executive Function and Play in Early Years

Course Aim: to provide practitioners with a better understanding of what self-regulation and executive function looks like in their setting. And how this fits within the revised EYFS and Development Matters.

Course Information: What does a self-regulation look like in a child? We are not born with self-regulatory skills but we are born with the ability to learn. Self-regulation matures in the presence of supportive, nurturing relationships and environments. Play is an important way in which we can support the development of children’s self-regulatory skills particularly through pretend and physical play. This course will consider how we can support the development of self-regulation and executive function using a variety of strategies.

Suitable For: Any Early Years Practitioners

NETWORK MEETING - Summer Term (2) - Speech and Language

Please note the timings of this session have changed since first advertised and will now run from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Whilst we will always have a focus to the network meetings, we are also mindful that there may be different concerns relating to any current issues. The network meetings will therefore always be topical taking into account the current landscape.

Our focus during this session will be guest speakers, Rebecca and Rebecca from Thriving Language talking about speech and language.

This network meeting is open to Early Years Managers and Deputies in PATA member settings and provides a great opportunity to meet with colleagues from other settings and share experiences and expertise.

Delivered by: Debs Adams and Michelle King. Debs has worked for PATA for over 10 years in a supporting membership role and has extensive knowledge of charity governance and compliance. Michelle is a PATA Early Years Support Officer and she previously spent 12 years as an early years educator,  5 years of this time as a setting manager.  Between them they draw upon their differing specialisms to offer support and guidance.

NoodleNow (online)

Please ignore the start date of July 2024 - these courses can be started at any time of the year.

NoodleNow provide online courses (there are currently 93 but this is increasing all the time). Once you are registered you can log in at any time and work through a course. At the end you will undertake a short test and if successful receive a certificate for your CPD file. All the courses are included in the cost and access is for one year from registration.

It's a great way for practitioners to upskill at their own pace, but also to pick a course to help with a specific issue - for example there is a course on dealing with biting. If you have a child who starts biting, any members of your team who are registered with NoodleNow can do the course as a refresher and come up with a plan of action.

We think that these courses will complement our 'live' training and provide you with another option for keeping your practice fresh and relevant.

Course included in the package cover everything from food safety, manual handling, physical development and outstanding practice. You can see the full list of courses here.

Cost (PATA Members only):

We are able to offer access to our members for 

£25 per person (no additional VAT) with no minimum number and including Noodle Nibbles.

(Individual membership is usually £99+VAT or organisational membership (with a minimum of 5 people) is usually £25+VAT per person (so a minimum of £150). There is also a ‘bolt on’ package of short courses called Noodle Nibbles which are usually an extra £5+VAT per person which will be included in your package.)

The access will last for a year and you can do as many of the courses in that time as you wish for no additional costs.

PATA Pocket-Sized: Fostering Independence

This course was originally scheduled for 12th March but has been postponed until 24th September. Please register your interest by joining the waiting list and we will be in touch once a date is confirmed.

This hour-long session explores the importance of fostering independence in early years. This explores how we can ensure we provide the best opportunities to allow for children to become independent in themselves and how we can support and develop children to think independently. This course includes plenty of ideas for you to explore and to reflect on your current practice. An ideas sheet to support your environment and daily practice will also be included.

Please be aware that PATA Pocket Sized sessions are an insight to the subject topic and given the short time, inevitably, we won't be able to cover everything.  If more in-depth training is required then we may be able offer this if there is enough interest or as a bespoke course for you.  Also, please be mindful that these sessions can be fast paced with lots of information contained within them to ensure you get the most out of the hour session.
