Introduction to children's oral health

SUITABLE FOR: EYFS practitioners working in playgroups, nurseries or crèches with children from birth to five (end of their reception year), volunteers, school reception staff and child minders.

COURSE INFORMATION: Tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in England, yet it is largely preventable. Locally, children are experiencing high levels of decay. This course provides an overview of the extent of the problem, together with practical advice on how to make small changes to your practice to improve the oral health of young children. The course will also provide you with information to enable you to provide brief opportunistic advice to parents on how to prevent dental decay. Course includes: Looking at hidden sugars in foods and drinks and fluoride content of children’s toothpaste; key messages to prevent dental decay and promote good oral health; information on resources available to help children learn about good oral health and preventive treatments such as fluoride varnish; signposting information to local dental services.

COURSE AIM: To raise awareness of the oral health status of local children aged five and under and to provide information and practical advice on how to improve oral health for this age group.
